Where It All Began
Growing up, I often wished for an older brother who could help me navigate life’s tricky moments. A brother who could help me choose the right subjects in high school, guide me through university applications, and explain how to open my first bank account. Not just handing out advice, but explaining things clearly and patiently.
What Inspired the Buti Brand
Not long ago, sitting at my desk overwhelmed by multiple banking websites, losing my place as I tried to compare accounts across three banks, that old wish resurfaced. I wished again for an older brother to pull out his laptop and say, “Okay, let’s go through this together.” Someone who would show me how to compare options, unpack interest rates, and explain how each account would impact my money.
This thought stayed with me, how empowering it would be to have someone clearly break everything down. Later, while training as a UX designer, I was inspired by my instructors at She Can Do, many of whom had worked for banks. Their experiences motivated me to pursue a career in banking UX design. To familiarise myself with banking products and design patterns, I began redesigning a bank website. Through this, I realized how confusing financial products still were for me. It brought me back to that original wish.

The Idea Behind the Buti Brand
What I set out to create was a digital older brother who’s got your back when life hands you complicated decisions. A Buti for everyone.
Buti comes from the word bhuti, a term used in iSintu languages spoken in southern Africa. Bhuti is a title of respect and affection for an older brother. And while I’m not a brother myself, the Buti brand embodies that role by offering clarity on complicated banking concepts with the patience and care an older brother would show a sibling. I’m privileged to be the voice behind Buti.
